Background of the study:
Forensic anthropology has become increasingly vital in human rights abuse cases, providing objective evidence in situations where conventional documentation is lacking. In Oredo Local Government Area, forensic anthropologists use methods such as skeletal trauma analysis and contextual investigation to document evidence of abuse and support legal claims (Adebayo, 2023; Udo, 2024). These methods have gained prominence in addressing cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, where reliable evidence is crucial for accountability. The interdisciplinary nature of forensic anthropology enables a comprehensive examination of human remains, linking physical evidence with historical and contextual narratives (Adebayo, 2023). This approach not only aids in bringing perpetrators to justice but also serves as a tool for historical documentation and healing within affected communities (Udo, 2024). Recent developments in forensic methodologies continue to enhance the accuracy and credibility of evidence presented in human rights cases.

Statement of the problem:
Human rights abuse cases in Oredo face significant challenges due to a lack of concrete evidence and insufficient documentation. The limited application of advanced forensic anthropology methods hampers investigations and the pursuit of justice, necessitating a thorough evaluation of current practices (Adebayo, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the application of forensic anthropology in human rights abuse cases.
  2. To identify methodological challenges in current practices.
  3. To recommend enhancements for forensic investigations.

Research questions:

  1. How are forensic anthropology methods applied in human rights abuse cases?
  2. What challenges affect their effectiveness in Oredo?
  3. How can these methods be improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology methods significantly aid human rights investigations.
  2. Current challenges reduce the effectiveness of evidence gathering.
  3. Improved methodologies will enhance case resolution.

Significance of the study:
This study will provide vital recommendations to improve forensic investigations in human rights abuse cases, aiding legal processes and reinforcing accountability in Oredo Local Government Area (Udo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to forensic anthropology methods in human rights abuse cases in Oredo Local Government Area. It does not extend to other regions or forms of abuse.

Definitions of terms:

  • Human rights abuses: Violations of fundamental rights and freedoms.
  • Forensic methods: Scientific techniques used to analyze physical evidence.
  • Accountability: The obligation to explain, justify, and take responsibility.
